Isabella Amram (b. 1995) is a Turkish-Venezuelan artist based in London. Born in Istanbul, she holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art.Her paintings develop through extended physical engagement with the canvas. Rather than beginning from a fixed image, Amram approaches painting as an open field of decisions, where gestures, revisions and interruptions gradually reorganise the surface. The image is not designed in advance but discovered through duration: each mark alters the conditions for the next. This working method becomes the point of contact with the symbolic structures that inform her practice. Drawing from the seventy-eight-card tarot deck, Amram selects individual archetypes as generative prompts. The cards are not illustrated; instead their internal logic shapes the sequence of actions through which the painting unfolds. Over time the surface begins to register a layered record of decisions, hesitations and returns. In this sense the paintings begin to resemble a form of visual divination, not unlike tasseography, where meaning emerges slowly through the sediment of marks. What appears in the image is never fully predictable. At times the process feels less like constructing an image than consulting a surface where something previously unknown begins to take form.
